Membership Requirements Print E-mail


There are two levels of membership : Certified Appraiser and Candidate Member. Both are dealt with separately below.

Certified Appraiser

Applicants are required to:-

  • Hold a Fellowship of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain
  • Devote a minimum of eight hours per week to appraisal and valuation work
  • Have a minimum of five years professional jewellery appraisal experience
  • To be able to demonstrate a certain level of trade activities have been attended over the last twelve months
  • Have access to a comprehensive range of appraisal and valuation instruments, equipment and resource material
  • Be willing to commit to uphold the points contained within the Association's Code of Ethics
  • Be willing to submit a sample Appraisal and Valuation Report with the application form

Certified Appraiser status will be granted to successful applicants on an annual basis subject to the Appraiser meeting the requirements of the Annual Re-Certification Programme.

The Annual Re-Certification Programme requires the Appraisers to accumulate a minimum number of Continued Education Points (CEP) throughout the year.
Continued Education Points are awarded by attending various courses, conferences, exhibitions, lectures and other trade activities. These activities do not need be events organised by the AJA. Members are encouraged to submit activities that could be taken into the CEP programme.


Candidate Member

Applicants are required to:-

  • Be actively engaged in jewellery appraisal and valuation work
  • Be willing to commit to uphold the points contained within the Association's Code of Ethics
